A Treatment You Can Trust

Neurofeedback Treatment in Dallas

Therapy for ADHD & Other Neurologic Disorders

Neurofeedback is a treatment that helps patients improve brain function through intensive brain training exercises. To do this, we measure a patient’s brain activity with Digital Neuro Evaluations (DNE).

DNEs provide us with a visual of the brain’s processes, allowing our physicians to create a customized neurofeedback treatment plan that addresses functional areas that could be improved.

The Neurofeedback Process

Neurofeedback, is a way to help you improve your brain function through intensive brain training exercises based on the specific functions that you need to improve.

Neurofeedback allows you to strengthen attention networks same way you learn every other skill – through feedback and practice. You get instantaneous information about changes in your brain’s electrical activity as you work. Neurofeedback treats the condition not the symptoms.

A step-by-step guide to neurofeedback:

  • Electrodes monitor brainwaves from a painless electrode cap placed on the patient’s head.
  • The monitored data is interpreted and displayed on a screen as a video game or some other type of interactive visual.
  • The electrodes monitor the brain for concentration, and reward focus with positive experiences in the visuals on the monitor.
  • Meanwhile, the therapist is also receiving feedback on a nearby monitor via charts and graphs that illustrate how the patient’s brain is functioning. With this detailed information, they can adjust treatment to help the patient reach their goals.
  • Patients see an immediate reward for staying focused, training their brain to maintain these patterns in their daily life.

The visual element of this treatment allows the patient to focus and retrain their brain to address certain weak points, such as concentration, memory processing, etc. When the patient is performing actions that line up with the goals of their treatment, the visual responds with positive feedback, such as speeding up a vehicle in a video game. When the brain loses focus, the visual will reflect this as well, providing the patient with a real-time, tangible consequence for losing concentration. With the visual, patients feel rewarded when their thoughts are more focused, training the brain to default to these patterns in day-to-day life.

Neurofeedback & ADHD

Research has shown that neurofeedback therapy can have a tremendous effect on children with ADHD. While there are many medications available for ADHD, they come with numerous side effects, and many patients report that they no longer feel like “themselves” when taking medications. Neurofeedback, however, does not require medication and the effects continue even after the treatment has concluded.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared neurofeedback as a Level 1 “Best Support” intervention for ADHD. This is the highest rating possible and puts it at the same level as medication and behavior therapy.
